Union delivers vote of ‘no confidence’ in Brockton police chief

Brockton police leadership turned in a vote of “no confidence” in Chief Brenda Perez on Wednesday, according to The Enterprise of Brockton.

The Brockton Police Supervisors Union, which is made up of sergeants, captains and lieutenants, announced the vote and issued a statement calling for Perez to be replaced.

The union cites “disparate treatment of Officers, lack of oversight over serious wrongdoing in the Department, blatant nepotism, and unexplained, erratic, and incompetent management of the BPD” as reasons for the vote.

“She must be replaced,” the statement reads.

Perez was appointed chief in 2022, according to the Brockton Police Department website. She is a graduate of Brockton High School and earned a master’s degree from Curry College before beginning her career as a patrol officer in 1999.

Perez is the first woman and first non-white person to serve as Brockton Chief of Police, according to The Enterprise.

A request for comment was not returned by Perez.

Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues issued a statement Thursday supporting Perez.

“I will not be bullied into making a hasty and ill-considered decision that does not best serve the people of Brockton,” Rodrigues said. “As I’ve said before, I fully support Chief Perez and the dedicated men and women of the Brockton Police Department and their mission to protect and serve our great city.”

The Brockton Police Supervisors Union plans to forward their complaints to the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.
