Traffic near the intersection of Northwest Blue Parkway and Northwest Ward Road in Lee’s Summit will be shut down and redirected for the coming months as a city contractor adds a roundabout and makes other road improvements in the area.

Work on the project, which has a $6.1 million budget, is expected to run into the fall.

Starting Friday, a section of Blue Parkway along Highway 50 will close for the work, according to the city. The road is set to remain closed through about the end of June, and then Blue Parkway will reopen once the roundabout is finished. The project will have a detour in place that routes around the closure.

Work will continue along Ward Road, and sections of the roadway will close as construction moves ahead. That work is expected to run into the fall. The work will include a total road reconstruction of Ward Road north to Northwest O’Brien Road. The road will also get sidewalks and five-foot bicycle lanes, streetlights, and curb, gutter and storm drainage improvements.
