New traffic light on Thomasville Road activating soon

Drivers on Thomasville Road will face a new stop with a traffic light coming online as a new development takes shape in northeast Tallahassee.

The Florida Department of Transportation said the light at the intersection of Thomasville and Velda Dairy roads is now in «flash mode.»

«Motorists will continue to follow normal traffic patterns during the flash mode period,» FDOT said in a news release.
Road closures along Velda Dairy Road are beginning Feb. 17. Drivers are advised to expect temporary detours during road work.

The light will later be switched into «operational mode» starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24. Once it switches gears, the left turn lane onto Ox Bottom Road will be permanently closed.

«Northbound traffic will access Ox Bottom Road from the signalized intersection,» FDOT said. «Southbound traffic may access Ox Bottom Road from the signalized intersection or at Ox Bottom Road.»

New traffic patterns and road closures are all a result of the roadway improvement project that’s underway in advance of the roads being joined as part of the Ox Bottom Meadows development, which will bring a SunStop gas station, a Starbucks, car wash, Surcherros restaurant and Trulieve to northeast Tallahassee.

«This closure is to complete utility tie-ins and to mill and resurface the roadway,» County Commissioner Brian Welch said in an email announcement. «Leon County has coordinated with Leon County Schools to ensure their awareness of the project.»
