Krewe of UNO brings Mardi Gras cheer to campus amid tumultuous times

The Krewe of UNO paraded Tuesday through a campus rife with uncertainty.

One of the city’s lesser known parades — and the state’s only university-specific Mardi Gras parade — the krewe composed mostly of University of New Orleans students, faculty and staff parades through the lakefront campus.

It’s quaint, not unlike a small neighborhood parade, with very basic attractions, like a trailer wrapped in butcher paper, a couple of local high school marching bands and small floats pulled by golf carts.

“This is one of the most charming traditions that I’ve been having the great fortune of helping to lead,” UNO President Kathy Johnson said. “It’s just a great way to bring the community together, obviously, the university, but also, we have a high school and an elementary school on campus.”
