‘I was in such shock’ | One day after Louisville woman moves into first apartment, it was destroyed in a fire

Twenty-year-old Raven Bryson spent months saving and searching for the right apartment. It would be the first time living on her own.

On Tuesday, February 10, she moved into a unit at a complex in the 8600 block of Park Laureate Drive, just off Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown.

She spent her first night at her new home, and left for work Wednesday afternoon. By 2:30 p.m. that day, Jeffersontown firefighters responded to a fire at her complex.

Bryson was at work when she got a call explaining what happened.

«And she was like, ‘well, unfortunately, your unit is completely destroyed,'» said Bryson. «I asked her to repeat it, because I didn’t really understand what she was telling me.»

Bryson says she broke down after absorbing the news of the fire.

Her unit was one of 12 affected by the fire, according to Jeffersontown Fire and EMS Captain Amber Cobb. Neighbors told WHAS 11 that flames and smoke were shooting out of the roof, which eventually collapsed.

Cobb confirmed that everyone escaped and no one was injured. But some neighbors, including Bryson, could not return home.

Among Bryson’s treasured losses were limited edition vinyl albums from her favorite artist, The Weeknd. A blanket she had been crocheting was burned, and so were items family had given to help fill out her apartment.
