Recent warmer weather is giving Kansans a glimpse of spring, prompting many to tend their lawns and gardens. While the Kansas State University Extension Center is often associated with gardening advice, its impact stretches far beyond flower beds and fertilizer.
With offices in all 105 counties, K-State’s Extension Centers serve as the university’s outreach arm, providing research-based information to local communities.
While many residents call about weeds or struggling plants, the center also provides resources in nutrition education, agriculture, 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, and community development.

“We’re here to take the research that’s being done at land grant universities like K-State and bring it to the citizens here in Shawnee County,” said Lane Weins, horticulture agent. “We’re a trusted resource for everyone in the community.”
As online information, including AI, becomes more common, the Extension Center encourages residents to rely on its science-backed guidance.
The Shawnee County office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
