The owners of Donovan Family Confections said they were sad to miss Valentine’s Day, as the construction on their new store is taking longer than planned, but can’t wait to open soon.
«It’s been heartbreaking as a confectionery having to miss Valentine’s Day which is a big holiday for us, so we’re hoping for a great reopening,» said chocolatier Katie Donovan who runs the business with her mother, Sue Donovan.
Donovan Family Confections outgrew their former sweet shop at 850 South Colony Road in Wallingford. They closed Dec. 23 and prepared to move about 2 miles down the road to the new space at Tower Plaza at 600 North Colony Road.
«We had two and a half hour lines for five hours right before Christmas, so we definitely needed to take this huge step for our growth,» Katie Donovan said.
The pair had hoped to be in the new store sometime in January but there were «lots of bumps in the road» with moving, pushing the new timeline to late February, she said. An opening date will be set based on town permitting.
«But we’re almost at the finish line and so ready to get back open,» Katie Donovan said.
The new store will have double the space, she noted.
When they open, they will offer their signature green, four-leaf clover chocolates for St. Patrick’s Day.
«People love our Irish Collection every year, so much we kept our Jameson bonbon as a signature flavor to sell all year,» she said.
