Flood mitigation efforts to start in Ruidoso area

Flood mitigation work to rectify flooding after the 2024 fires in the Ruidoso area is slated to begin soon.

Next week, crews will start installing “large woody debris structures” in canyons impacted by the South Fork Fire, officials with the Lincoln National Forest said.

These structures help slow water during heavy flows and support long-term watershed recovery.

Crews will use dead standing trees to restore stream function, reduce erosion, and improve floodplain access, all on Forest Service lands.

Temporary closures may be in place for public safety. Watch for posted signs near active work areas.
