Plymouth-Canton school bus overturns in crash; no students aboard

A Plymouth-Canton Community Schools bus rolled on its side in a crash with a truck on the morning of Friday, Feb. 13, but no students were on board.

The crash took place about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Northville Road and Edward N. Hines Drive in Plymouth Township, said Plymouth Township Police Chief James Knittel.

The township is west of Livonia and Detroit, and south of Novi and Northville.

Preliminary investigation showed that a passenger truck and the bus collided in the intersection, according to a news release from Knittel’s department.

The truck was traveling on Hines Drive and the bus was traveling on Northville Road, police said. The impact caused the bus to roll onto its side.

The one adult passenger on the bus was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said. Drivers of both vehicles were evaluated but declined further medical attention.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, in a statement, confirmed that one of its buses was involved in a crash while students were not on board.

The bus was operated by Durham Student Services, and the district indicated it was a Durham employee that was injured.

Durham Student Services did not immediately provide comment on the situation.

Though general education students in the district were off on Friday, some special education students did have school, said Frank Ruggirello, executive director of communications and marketing, in an email. The bus is used for special education students.
