Volunteers sought to help remove invasive shrubs at Saugatuck Dunes

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is inviting volunteers to help remove invasive shrubs at Saugatuck Dunes State Park on Feb. 22, according to a community announcement.

The event runs 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at 6575 138th Ave. in Laketown Township. Participants will learn how to identify and remove invasive species that threaten the park’s dune and prairie ecosystems.

“Wintertime is actually a wonderful time to tackle invasives for a few reasons,” said Tyler Lidgard, a natural resource steward who leads the events at the park.

According to the release, wintertime provides easier access to woody invasive species because vegetation is less dense. In addition, treating shrubs with herbicide during the winter is more effective because the plants store energy in their root systems.
