Biden returning to South Carolina six years after he won primary

Former President Joe Biden will be in South Carolina almost six years after he won the state’s Democratic Primary, a moment that helped reignite his campaign to the White House.

The event is expected to honor his legacy as a politician and elected official, according to a social media post.

According to the South Carolina Democratic Party, Biden will be in Columbia on Feb. 27.

His 2020 South Carolina primary victory will be honored at a reception at 7 p.m. The event is being labeled as a cocktail buffet, with business attire required.
Biden’s primary victory over large Democratic field

On Feb. 29, 2020, Biden defeated Democratic candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Tom Steyer in the SC Democratic Primary.

During the SC Democratic primary, early Greenville County results showed Biden winning 38.17% of the vote. Sanders had 24.7% of the vote. Rounding out the top four were Steyer with 10.68% and Buttigieg with 10.5%. Anderson County’s precincts showed Biden the winner with 41.8% of the vote. Sanders won 23.49%, and Steyer followed with 13.55%. In Spartanburg, Biden received 42.3%, Sanders 24.9%, and Steyer 12.3%.
Biden wins the Democratic Primary in 2024 but later drops out of race

Biden won by a decisive margin in South Carolina’s 2024 Democratic presidential primary with roughly 96% of the vote, according to a Greenville News article on Feb. 3, 2024.

«In 2020, it was the voters of South Carolina who proved the pundits wrong, breathed new life into our campaign, and set us on the path to winning the Presidency,» Biden said in a statement, according to the article. «Now in 2024, the people of South Carolina have spoken again, and I have no doubt that you have set us on the path to winning the Presidency again—and making Donald Trump a loser—again.»

After a disastrous debate performance against President Donald Trump, Biden announced he would end his campaign for president on July 21, 2024.
Biden has made many visits to SC over the years

President Biden spent his last full day in office, Jan. 19, 2025, in Charleston, South Carolina. He visited the Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston and the International African American Museum at Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston.

In January 2024, Biden attended the First-in-the-Nation dinner at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia, where hundreds of attendees celebrated that the first Democratic primary would be held in the Palmetto State.
