Northeast Kansas traffic stop leads to driver’s deportation

A northeast Kansas traffic stop last week led to the driver’s deportation, said Brown County Sheriff John D. Merchant.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 11 handed over Diego Juarez, 39, of Lincoln, Nebraska, to the Department of Homeland Security, he said.

In an email titled, «US-75 traffic stop leads to deportation,» Merchant said Juarez was stopped for a traffic violation about 10 p.m. Oct. 10 while driving on US-75 highway near 160th Street in Brown County. After being found to not possess a valid driver’s license, Juarez was arrested and booked into the Brown County Jail in Hiawatha in connection with driving while canceled, restricted or revoked, he said.

«While in the Brown County Jail, it was learned that the Department of Homeland Security had a detainer on Juarez and he was released to DHS the next morning,» Merchant said.

Merchant hadn’t responded to an email from The Capital-Journal seeking further details, including the country to which Juarez was deported.

The arrest and deportation came at a time when the federal government has been cracking down on immigrants who are in the country illegally.
